  • Race Report

HRC factory rider and former MX2 world champion, Tom Vialle has taken his first overall victory in the MXGP class with a 1-6 performance in Switzerland today. The Frenchman looked out of the running for the overall after a horrible start in the second moto but came through nicely to show is pedigree. Second overall Maxime Renaux with 2-7 and third was Tim Gajser with 9-2.

Tom Vialle: I had no idea I won the GP and I had such a bad start, maybe 20th and I crashed and finished fifth or sixth in the second race, which was good enough to win the Grand Prix. I am pretty happy, we worked all winter for this. Really two different motos, the first one start to finish lead and I am really happy and we will now focus on the next one. Its nice to win my first ever 450 round.

Lucas Coenen: I feels good to have the red plate, but I am mad (he wasn't given a black flag in the opening moto and didn't know he was disqualified). I wanted to win the second one and I didn't crash and I made it happen. Happy to end on a good note and now we have Sardinia, and we will enjoy that a lot.

Of course, the big news was both Lucas Coenen and Jeffrey Herlings being disqualified in the opening moto for outside assistance after both lost a chain. Obviously, both could have won the GP as their second moto results of first and third showed that. It does however make the championship picture, very interesting.

In the MXGP championship points, its very tight after three rounds as Coenen again holds the red plate, Lucas Coenen 136 points, Tom Vialle 129pts, Jeffrey Herlings 124pts, Maxime Renaux 117pts, Tim Gajser 116pts.

MXGP Moto Two

Coenen with the lead ahead of Herlings, Febvre, Jonass, Gajser, Fernandez, de Wolf, Vlaanderen, Renaux and Seewer. Gajser into fourth as Jonass has problems, as he pulled off the circuit. Coenen already nearly three seconds ahead as he is charging hard. Vialle in 15th place.

Herlings pulled back the lead of Coenen back to 2.9 seconds and Vialle up to 13th place, but its going to be tough to win the GP from there. Adamo in ninth place and Vialle into 12th and then 11th. Lap two the lead by Coenen was 3.4 seconds, with Febvre 5.7 back and Gajser 8.4 back.

Lap three and the lead by Coenen was 6.9 seconds and he is again showing that amazing speed he had in Spain last weekend. Vialle a mistake and back into 11th. On lap five it was Coenen with a 12 second lead over Herlings, then Febvre, who was all over the back wheel of the Dutchman, then came Gajser, de Wolf, Renaux, Fernandez, Vlaanderen, Adamo and Oliver.

Lap eight and Coenen had pulled to 15 seconds ahead of Herlings, with Febvre close to the Dutchman, then Gajser, de Wolf, Renaux, Fernandez, Vlaanderen, Vialle and Oliver. Vlaanderen passed Fernandez for seventh spot. Adamo penalized 18 places. Vialle moved into eight and chasing the overall win still.

Gajser again showing a better second moto performance as he chases down Febvre for third spot and those two not far behind Herlings. Lap 11 and Coenen maintained his lead over Herlings, which was still around 15 seconds, while Febvre and Gajser hounded the Honda rider.

Gajser moved past Febvre and all over Herlings for second spot. Vialle into seventh and the overall winner at this stage of the moto. Top ten on lap 11 was Coenen, Herlings, Gajser, Febvre, de Wolf, Renaux, Vialle, Vlaanderen, Fernandez and Forato.

De Wolf worked his way past Febvre on lap 13 and Coenen just controlling the race with that 15 second lead. Gajser really pushing Herlings hard to get to second. Vialle into sixth place. Gajser into second place as he passed Herlings after the Dutchman crashed and nearly run over by Gajser.

De Wolf pushing to get to Herlings and it’s the old vs the new for Dutch motocross. On lap 16 it was Coenen with nearly 20 seconds over Gajser, then Herlings, de Wolf, Febvre, Vialle, Renaux, Vlaanderen, Forato and Ferandez. Coenen wins the moto and Vialle the GP. Welcome to the new era in MXGP motocross.
