A circuit that has been one of the best partners of the FIM Motocross World Championship in recent years is the Swedish circuit of Uddevalla. The beautiful little circuit nestled against the huge rock formation has held a Grand Prix since 1958 and will again run a Grand Prix this coming weekend.

Despite its recent involvement with the FIM Motocross World Championship, Uddevalla wasn’t a circuit that held a lot of Grand Prix’s in the early days of GP motocross. Way back in 1958 local rider Sten Lundin won the 500cc Grand Prix, and then three years later legendary Bill Nilsson also added his name to the victory list at Uddevalla. Uddevalla wouldn’t return to the 500cc GP scene until 1997 with Joel Smets winning and Smets won again in 1999 and 2000. Stefan Everts won the big boy class in 2001 and 2002

The 250 class also visited Uddevalla on a few occasions, with wins to Vladimir Kaninov in 1977 and Stefan Everts in 1994. Gordon Crockard won in 2001 and Mickeal Pichon in 2002. Kenneth Gunderson won in the 125cc class in 2001, and Ben Townley won in 2002. Everts won in both the MX2 and 450 class in 2003 and Smets won yet another in the 650 class that same year.

In 2004 the love-affair between the circuit and the GP series was reignited and it was French legend Mickael Pichon who won the MX1 class and young New Zealander Ben Townley got his second win at the circuit, when he led home the MX2 boys.

In 2005 it was another New Zealander in Josh Coppins who won the MX1 class (just ahead of Townley who had moved up to the MX1 class) and Cairoli took his first victory in the MX2 class.

A year later in 2006 and 12 years after his victory in the 250cc class in 1994 and Stefan Everts scored the win in the MX1 class, it would of course be Everts’ last visit to the Swedish circuit. David Philippaerts kept an Italian on top of the MX2 podium with a 1-2 victory.

In 2007 Belgian Ken De Dycker won the MX1 class and Cairoli scored win number two in the MX2 class. Cairoli not to be forgotten by the Swedish fans picked up his third MX2 win in 2008 as Jonathan Barragan became the fifth different winner in six years in the MX1 class.

2009 and drama as Rui Goncalves in a huge battle with Marvin Musquin for the MX2 title won the GP after Musquin was disqualified (Musquin changed teams’ mid-season from Honda to KTM). Max Nagl won the MX1 class. Cairoli who had moved to the MX1 class was second to the German rider.

2010 and Cairoli scored his first MX1 victory, but his fourth GP win at the circuit and Frenchman Steven Frossard won the MX2 class. Frossard who moved to the MX1 class in 2011 become the 8th different winner in the MX1 class at Uddevalla, adding to his MX2 win the previous season and Ken Roczen scored the win in the MX2 class.

2012 and Clement Desalle took victory after Uddevalla favourite Cairoli scored DNF-DNF twice being caught in the mud. In the MX2 class Tommy Searle won. And then in 2013, Cairoli scored victory number five at the circuit and Jeffrey Herlings scored his first win at the circuit in the MX2 class.

Cairoli would win again in 2014 in the MXGP class, beating Jeremy Van Horebeek and Kevin Strijbos. In MX2, Herlings scored his second win at Uddevalla, beating Jordi Tixier and Tim Gajser. Romain Febvre won the 450 class in 2015, with again Van Horebeek and Strijbos second and third and in the MX2 class Tim Gajser won ahead of Valentin Guillod and Jeremy Seewer.

2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and Uddevalla wasn’t on the calendar and when it returned in 2022, Jeremy Seewer won MXGP, ahead of Gajser and Glenn Coldenhoff and Jago Geerts won MX2 ahead of Tom Vialle and Simon Langenfelder.

Seewer, showing his liking for the circuit won again in 2023, ahead of Febvre and Jorge Prado and in MX2 Langenfelder won ahead of Liam Everts and Andrea Adamo. Jorge Prado won in 2024 ahead of Gajser and Herlings and in MX2 Lucas Coenen won from Adamo and Langenfelder.

Last year, Febvre got another win ahead of Herlings and Calvin Vlaanderen, adding to his victory a decade earlier in 2015, and in MX2 Langenfelder won from Kay De Wolf and Adamo.

The two greatest Grand Prix riders of all time, Stefan Everts and Antonio Cairoli have had huge success at this circuit, both winning on six occasions, while current red plate owner in the MXGP class, Jeffrey Herlings has two wins, his results at this circuit are actually, not up to his normally high standards.

His first appearance at the circuit in 2010, he finished second, then second again in 2011 and 2012, before winning in 2013 and 2014. In 2015 he was 7th, then didn’t race there again until 2019, where he finished 12th, returning in 2023 with a fourth place overall, before finishing third and second in 2024 and 2025. His last victory then, way, way back in 2014. The form he is in, you would imagine a victory is very possible in 2026.
