Mewse The Master

The Crendon Tru7 Honda team’s MX1 aces ended the Plews British Masters championship with a one-two sweep in the final standings at sun-soaked Wroxton on Sunday. Conrad Mewse kept his undefeated run intact with yet another dominant double win in the three-round series while Jamie Carpenter did just what he had to do to clinch runner-up in the series.

And riding his Honda CRF250R against the 450s, the team’s MX2 rider Charlie Richmondwas fifth overall to take ninth in the series despite missing one round to race European championships. Once again the day belonged to Mewse, who set the fastest time in qualifying with Richmond fifth and Carpenter ninth despite a slide off in the muddy conditions.

As the gate dropped on the opening moto, Mewse quickly took command with Richmond and Carpenter well inside the top ten. Mewse led from Taylor Hammal and Bobby Bruce but the Honda man was no match for his rivals. Hammal gave chase hard, but Mewse worked hard to pull away to win by almost 23 seconds – setting a fastest lap time 1.2secs faster than Hammal.

Richmond also had a great start but clashed with another rider on the opening lap. He got going again and was credited with 15th by the end of the lap, then put on a superhuman charge through the field. He made confident passes and got up to seventh by the end of the fourth lap. He kept working hard and made one more pass to come home in sixth place, which was second 250 rider against a field of 450s.

Still not 100% race fit after some recent spills, Carpenter was on a mission to make sure he clinched second in the series and was keeping a watchful eye on the two riders who could catch him in the championship, Josh Vail and Carlton Husband.

Carpenter got a decent start and ended the first lap in seventh place, crucially passing Vail on the second lap while Husband was several places back. The Honda man swiftly moved up to fifth place and looked comfortable, but then a super-tight chicane caught him out and he stalled the bike. He got going again and braved the tough conditions to come home in eighth – one spot in front of Husband with Vail 14th.

It was all to play for in race two in terms of the championship, with Mewse only needed a handful of points to clinch the title while Carpenter needed to beat Husband and Vail. Husband made a tremendous start and led the pack away, tailed by Mewse with Richmond in sixth and Carpenter ninth. Mewse made a decisive pass on Husband on the opening lap to take the lead.

From there, he was unchallenged as he pulled out a gap of almost 12 seconds from eventual second place man Hammal. Mewse crossed the line to a spray of champagne to take his first title of the 2026 season.

It looked like Carpenter had his work cut out to catch Husband but on the second lap, Husband made a mistake and ended up right at the back of the pack, one place in front of Vail.

Mewse: “Definitely a good day going fastest in qualifying then one-one and wrapping up the championship in this short, three-round series. It's been great to be a part of the series and the team did an amazing job. We finished it off here at Wroxton and the track was great. The team did a great job of prepping it and to keep the keep dust down in this hot weather. And with my team-mate Jamie second in the championship, it’s so good to go one-two for both of us and of course the whole team. With such a short series, there is no room for error and we managed to get the job done.”

Carpenter: “My goal was to make sure I finished second in the series and that’s exactly what I managed to do. It’s a great result for me and the team, of course. I’m disappointed not to have finished higher on the day, but I have to be pleased that I’m feeling more comfortable on the bike. We made some suspension set-up changes in the run up to this event which I think are an improvement. This is my last championship round for three weeks so I’ll have time to properly get the bike dialled in, regroup and be ready for the next British championship at Monster Mountain.”

Richmond: “I’m pleased with today for sure. I started off with fifth in qualifying, which I was really happy with, and then moved on to the race, and I finished second MX2 rider. I had a good start but I got caught up with another rider on the first lap so I had to make my way through the pack again. So I got my way back to sixth in the race but I was second MX2 rider. In the second race I had a good start, actually. Must have been top five or six from the beginning and was happy running there. I was the leading MX2 rider and caught up to Bobby Bruce but I couldn't get my way around him. So my pace dropped and I lost my flow. Then Jamie Keithpassed me on the last lap, so I finished, fifth overall but second in MX2 again. “So yeah, it was a good day and I'm happy with the bike. I made some changes in the week on the suspension, so that was a positive.”

Team manager Ryan Thorpe: “The incredible heat made conditions tough today for everyone but once more, it was a successful event for the while team. Conrad was again in dominant form to take the win and the title, and it’s fantastic that Jamie clinched second in the series. First and second for the Crendon Tru7 Honda team in the series is testament not only to the riders but to everyone who works so hard for this. The mechanics, our technical partners and sponsors all play a vital part in racing so I’d like to thank all of them for the incredible effort everyone puts in. And although he wasn’t in contention for the title after missing a round to race in the EMX series, Charlie just gets better every week. It’s hard to believe it’s only his first year off 125s in the youth championships. He’s a talent and hard worker, and fifth overall today as vastly more experience riders show just how good he is.”
