Herlings Wins - Coenen DNF
HRC factory rider, Jeffrey Herlings had not only won the Saturday qualification race for the 450 boys but also closed the points gap of Lucas Coenen and is now just one point behind going into tomorrow’s two motos.
Red Bull KTM rider, Lucas Coenen, started the race in second, but slowly dropped back, eventually falling out of the top ten and scoring zero points. Mid-race, Coenen retired from the race.
Jeffrey Herlings: Yes man, its coming close, but still a lot of races and it could change and go the other way around. I am gutted to Lucas and I am not sure what their team will do (for tomorrow). HRC have been working so hard for me and all my sponsors.
Championship points are now, Lucas Coenen 566 points, Jeffrey Herlings 565pts, Romain Febvre 503pts, Tim Gajser 458pts, Maxime Renaux 393pts.
MXGP Qualification Race
Vialle led the MXGP qualifier from Coenen, but Herlings pushed his way into second on the second corner. Top ten was Vialle, Herlings, Coenen, Adamo, Febvre, Seewer, Gifting, Gajser, Fernandez and de Wolf. Herlings all over Vialle for the lead and those two 2.4 ahead of Coenen.
Herlings into the lead with a nice pass on Vialle and the Dutchman really looking determined to take that red plate this weekend. Adamo moved past Coenen, as the Belgian probably struggling with the pain of his leg. Febvre all over Coenen and we know the Kawasaki rider doesn’t take prisoners.
Febvre into fourth and Coenen back to fifth place. Gajser now all over Coenen and the Slovenian into fifth. De Wolf the next man to try and get Coenen and he did that soon after Gajser. Coenen struggling and maybe that 11-point lead turns into one at the end of this race.
Coenen dropping places and slowing as he dropped out of the top ten. Coenen into 11th and hardly worth continuing now as he dropped to 13th. Febvre all over Vialle for second place and those guys were four seconds off the leader. De Wolf making his comeback race passed Gajser for fifth. Febvre into second place.
De Wolf all over Adamo as Coenen dropped out of the race and headed back to the team truck. Big question marks now if he can race tomorrow. Fernandez crashed and de Wolf did the same, Fernandez dropping to 11th and de Wolf seventh. Top ten was Herlings, Febvre, Vialle, Adamo, Gajser, Seewer, de Wolf, Geerts, Gifting and Renaux.
Herlings an easy qualification win, and now just a point off the red plate and it seems sure, tomorrow he will leave Loket with the red plate. Febvre was second and Vialle third. Febvre also making a lot of ground on Coenen as he is showing consistency.
