Coenen Wins South Africa
Relentless Lucas Coenen of the Red Bull KTM factory team has again gone 1-1 to extend his championship lead over Jeffrey Herlings, with the Dutchman going 2-2 and third was Romain Febvre with 3-3 scores. The young Belgian now has a massive 68 points lead over Herlings (566 to 498) going into the British GP in two weeks time.
It was Coenen's 21st Grand Prix victory and the teenager could equal British legend Dave Thorpe, (who has 22 GP wins) in England, at the next GP. Also on 22 GP wins are legends Alex Puzar, Sten Lundin and Rolf Tibblin. The young Belgian is really making a name for himself as he rushes to possibly his first major title.
Lucas Coenen: I mean, yes, second moto was good. I saw Jeffrey was behind and I pushed and I managed to win. Two moto wins this weekend and now we head to Southwick on our weekend off. Of course, it was a good weekend. Good starts and controlled the race from the front. It has been fun and now we go to US to have more fun.
Jeffrey Herlings: First moto I was putting in the charge and crashed by myself and highsided. Second moto I thought lets put in a charge and we passed Romain and then I nearly went over the bars and saw Jesus in front of me. I managed to get 2-2 and look forward to the next one in England.
MXGP Moto Two
Coenen again with the lead in the second MXGP moto, followed by Vialle, Febvre, Herlings, Adamo, Vlaanderen, Gajser, Jonass, Fernandez and Forato in 10th place. By lap five the lead by Coenen over Vialle was two seconds, with Febvre 4.2 back and Herlings 5.4 back. Vlaanderen moved into fifth place, which was great at his home GP.
Febvre moved past Vialle, who continues to fade in races, with Herlings also going past the Frenchman. The lead by Coenen over Febvre was four seconds on lap six. Febvre catching Coenen and Herlings trying to stick with the Frenchman on his charge to the front.
Jonass crashed and dropped from his eighth place, with Fernandez barging his way through. The lead by Coenen on lap six was now just 2.5 and Febvre a couple of seconds ahead of Herlings. Febvre the best lap of the race with a 1.53.701, more than a second quicker than the best for Coenen.
Lap eight and the lead was cut to 1.9 seconds, with Herlings 4.9 off the front, then came Vialle, Vlaanderen, Gajser, Adamo, Fernandez, Oliver and Renaux. Febvre getting closer and closer as the gap went to 1.6 seconds, with Herlings also making a bit of ground on the front two. Coenen turns up the speed and makes it quickly 2.8, in complete control the young Belgian rider.
Herlings catching Febvre, with the 10 minute and two laps remaining. This was usually a time when Herlings made his late lap charge. Febvre 1.8 back and Herlings 3.6 off Coenens lead. Seems like Coenen is playing with Febvre and Herlings as the lead was again 2.7 over Febvre and 3.5 over Herlings.
Herlings pushed up the inside of Febvre to take second place and its go time for the Dutchman. The gap is 3.1 to Coenen on lap 11. Coenen a second slower than Herlings in the previous lap, but the gap was still 3.2 seconds. The lead by Coenen was 2.2 seconds with four minutes and two laps remaining.
Vlaanderen moved into fourth place with a pass on Vialle and Gajser also passed the fading Frenchman. Top ten was Coenen, Herlings, Febvre, Vlaanderen, Gajser, Vialle, Adamo, Fernandez, Oliver and Renaux.
