  • Race Report

Just like twin brother Sasha in the MX2 opening moto, Lucas Coenen has shown a perfect race performance as he led from the opening corner, until the final flag. There was some drama though, as the Belgian lost his clutch and wasn't happy when interviewed after the race.

The Red Bull KTM factory rider just controlled the pace, held around seven seconds over the others and in Jett Lawrence type race craft, never had to push himself too hard for the victory, until his clutch issues that is.

Unfortunately for nine time winner at Kegums, Jeffrey Herlings, he finished third behind Coenen and countryman, Kay De Wolf, meaning that Herlings is now 37 points off the championship red plate.

Lucas Coenen: I am not happy at all. I thought I was going to die, so many bad moments and my clutch went out. Somehow I managed to win it, but when you don't have a clutch. I am nervous, because I had big moments, but lets hope we do enjoy the second moto.

MXGP Moto One

In perfect conditions, Coenen with the lead in the opening MXGP moto, with Febvre second, then Herlings, Jonass, Oliver, de Wolf, Adamo, Gajser, Vlaanderen and Fernandez 10th. Coenen again showing ridiculous speed early with a 1.4 second lead in the opening lap, with Herlings 2.4 behind the young Belgian.

Herlings all over Febvre for second place and really putting a lot of pressure on the defending MXGP champion. Herlings knows he cannot let Coenen get away. Herlings a small mistake and 3.2 behind Coenen now.

De Wolf moved past Jonass and into fourth place, with Gajser up to sixth spot and on lap two the top ten was Coenen, Febvre, Herlings, de Wolf, Jonass, Gajser, Fernandez, Oliver, Adamo and Vlaanderen. Renaux up to 15th place after a horrible start.

Coenen levels above everyone else as he just looks so smooth and in control as he gets away from everyone. Herlings again onto Febvre and looking for a way into second place, and both around three seconds off the pace of Coenen.

Lap three and the lead by Coenen was now nearly four seconds over Febvre, with Herlings more than five seconds off the pace. Gajser into fifth spot with a pass on Jonass, and Renaux up to 13th spot. A nice battle looming for second place with both Herlings and de Wolf onto Febvre.

Coenen his best lap of the moto and a second quicker than the King of Kegums, Herlings. The gap between Coenen and Febvre was 5.5 seconds on lap five, with Herlings 6.3 back, and de Wolf 8.8 back.

Herlings pushing hard and all over Febvre, but the Frenchman isn’t allowing the Dutchman through. Good to see Febvre in the mix after a very up and down season. Coenen just maintaining his lead, but hard to know if he is actually pushing really hard, because he looks in such control.

Again, Herlings and de Wolf onto Febvre and surely the veteran world champion has to crack at some point? Coenen 6.1 ahead of Febvre and the frustrating for Herlings, who cannot move into second place and get a clear track.

Lap nine and the lead by Coenen is 7.2 seconds and Herlings finally into second place and de Wolf also passed the Frenchman. It was sure to happen and did. The lead by Coenen now 6.8 and can Herlings get some momentum.

Herlings definitely trying to get to Coenen, but de Wolf all over Herlings and creating a lot o pressure for the older Dutchman. 10 minutes to go and this is isually Herlings go time, but Coenen has also shown that Herlings type of speed late in the race.

Pretty handy top ten when you compare it to the AMA top ten this morning. De Wolf into second, with it Coenen, de Wolf, Herlings, Febvre, Gajser, Fernandez, Jonass, Oliver, Adamo and Vlaanderen.

De Wolf making a lot of ground on Coenen, with the lead now just four seconds, but is the leader playing? One lap remaing and the gap was three seconds.

Coenen wins it from De Wolf and Herlings, with Febvre fourth and Gajser fifth. Coenen complaining of having no clutch as he crossed the finish line.
