Coenen in Control - France
Talented 19-year-old, Lucas Coenen on his Red Bull KTM machine has won the opening moto in very impressive fashion. The Belgian, and man with the red plate took the lead early and just pulled away from the opposition.
Second was HRC factory rider, Jeffrey Herlings and third was Monster Energy Yamaha rider, Tim Gajser. The two five time world champions were close together at the end, but around 20 seconds off the winner.
Lucas Coenen: I feel good, but my mouth is so dry, because its so hot. I felt good out there and the start is the key and I did that. I will do the same thing in the second one.
MXGP Moto One
Coenen with the lead early in the opening MXGP race, with Vialle second, then Adamo, Herlings, de Wolf, Renaux, Jonass, Gajser, Fernandez and Febvre. Lap one and Coenen already led by two seconds as Herlings moved into third place and Adamo moved last Vialle to get into second.
On lap two the gap for Coenen was 2.4 over Adamo, with Herlings 3.5 back, and then Vialle, De Wolf, Renaux, Gajser, Jonass, Febvre and Fernandez. Febvre went down and dropped back in the pack and the lead by Coenen was 2.7 over Adamo.
On the fifth lap the lead was five seconds over Herlings, who had passed Adamo, with the Italian in third, then de Wolf, Renaux, Gajser, Vialle, Jonass, Fernandez and Febvre. Lap nine and the lead was seven seconds as the Belgian was getting further and further away from Herlings, with Gajser into fourth place as he passed Renaux and de Wolf.
With 11 minutes to go, and Herlings might be making a little progress to the front as the gap was less than seven seconds with Gajser now 14.6 behind. Coenen a really quick lap as he opened the lead to 7.7.
Lap 14 and the lead by Coenen was 9.6 seconds, with Herlings a further 7.3 ahead of Gajser, then came De Wolf, Adamo, Renaux, Vialle, Febvre, Fernandez and Bonacorsi. Renaux slipped over and dropped back a little but didn’t lose a spot. Coenen wins it from Herlings and Gajser.
