Coenen Brothers and USA
With all the rumours of the Coenen brothers going to America for a round of the AMA Nationals this year, we only need to go back to December when it was again rumoured that they would line up at A1 and some other AMA supercross races to understand, rumours are often just that. Often started by media looking for attention.
For the Coenen’s to race in America for a round of the AMA Nationals, it just doesn’t seem possible. With just three rounds free on weekends MXGP will not be running, those being round three at Thunder Valley on June 13 and then round six at Southwick on July 11 and the second last round at Ironman on August 29.
With both men chasing world titles and being in contention, the only chance I see them going is if they are in fact, not in contention for a world title at the time. Similar to Jeffrey Herlings when he went to Ironman in 2017 and dominated.
Thunder Valley comes between Kegums in Latvia and Montevarchi in Italy, and I think with Thunder Valley being hard pack, and the results of Lucas at Trentino last weekend, I don’t imagine he would be looking forward to taking on the best AMA riders, on a circuit he hasn't ridden and might not enjoy.
Of course, Southwick, which comes between Portugal and Foxhill might be a good one, and while Southwick isn’t real sand track, like Lommel, Kegums or Arnhem, it is probably the best shot at being competitive in a new series they have never raced and on a track they have never ridden.
The problem with Southwick, which is the same problem as Thunder Valley and Ironman, all three rounds wouldn’t have a weekend free before or after, and flying to a race in USA, still recovering from your Grand Prix the previous weekend and then preparing for your GP weekend after, that just doesn’t seem logical.
Ironman is a circuit they will both know, having races the MXoN there last year and Lucas went 2-10 for his Sunday races, with Sasha going 20-21. Lucas scored sixth in the MXGP qualifier at the Nations and Sasha won his qualifier for MX2, so there might be some excitement for the brothers to attend Ironman on August 29, the week after Arnhem and the weekend before Turkey.
If I had to guess which round the two brothers might attend, it might just be that final round at Ironman, but again, if the brothers are battling for points with Herlings, Gajser, Febvre, de Wolf, Vialle, Langenfelder, Everts, McLellan and Farres, NO WAY they take a trip to USA in-between.
My advice, just like the A1 rumours, don’t listen to any rumours, because until the brothers are on an airplane to USA and we get official news from either KTM, AMA or MXsports, hold your horses on getting excited for it to happen.
One thing is for sure, the way the two brothers are riding now, every team in the MXGP and AMA paddock will be looking to sign them, when their MXGP contract with KTM runs out at the end of 2027.
