450 Class - GP Wins

It is a story we all know so well, the victory tally of the great Dutchman, Jeffrey Herlings. When he crossed the finish line to take victory in Argentina a little over a week ago, he claimed his 52nd win in the 450 class and his 113th from both MXGP and MX2. A stunning tally, when you consider he has raced only 210 GPs in his career and many of those, he didn’t finish, due to injury. That’s better than a 50% win rate.

Now, “The Bullet” is a long way from the total 450 wins of Antonio Cairoli, who won 39 in the MX1 class and 31 in the MXGP class and of course, a lot of those wins by the legendary Italian came on a 350, but still, they were still in the 450 class. Of course, Tony also raced in the 450 class from 2009 until 2021, so a long period of time.

Those 70 wins are in the reach of Herlings, but it will take a couple of years for the Dutchman to get to 71, but he can do it. Cairoli also has 450 titles in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2017.

Where the win tally of Cairoli took a bit of a battering was once Gajser and Herlings moved up to the 450 class and of his 94 GP wins, he picked up just 19 wins, from the seven-year period from 2015 until he retired in 2021.

When we look back at the big three from the last decade (Herlings, Gajser and Febvre), the name Tim Gajser sits pretty high, with his four MXGP titles in 2016, 2019, 2020 and 2022. Nobody has won more titles than Tim in the last decade, and he also has 47 GP wins in the MXGP class, which is only topped by Herlings with his 52 wins. Of course, many of the Cairoli and Everts 450 wins came in the MX1 era.

Gajser has had big years when it comes to winning GPs, taking seven in his rookie season in 2016, nine in 2019 and 10 in 2022. The Slovenian entered MXGP in his 48th GP and now has 212, so he hasn’t missed too many rounds. Gajser has had seasons off the bike, he only raced eight GPs in 2013 and 10 in 2025. He has 47 GP wins from a decade in the class.

Defending world MXGP champion Romain Febvre obviously entered the 450 class in 2015 and won his first world title that very year. The 2015 season remains his most successful when it comes to winning GPs, as he took eight in his championship season, but until 2023 and 2025, his numbers have been pretty low and from 2017 until 2022, he only won three GPs but did win six in 2023 and five in 2025. Febvre has won 25 GPs in 11 years in the class.

While Gajser has raced 160 GPs in MXGP since his debut, Herlings has been very hit and miss. He raced his first GP in MXGP in 2017, a year after Gajser joined the class and it was his 99th GP. In the last nine years, from 2017 until the end of 2025, he races just 111 GPs. We all know the injury stats, he raced just five GPs in 2019, six in 2020, none in 2022, 11 in 2023. Of course, his 2018 season was unbelievable, winning 17 GPs and 13 in a row at one point. He has won 52 GPs in nine years in the class, which is very impressive, even more so when you consider he has missed so many rounds.

Sidebar - Everts

The GOAT of Grand Prix racing, Stefan Everts has 50 wins in the 450 class, those coming from 2001 until 2006, so a very short period of time, and of course, his best year was his final season in the sport, when he won 14 GPs in 2006. He could have added another 20 or 30, had he hung around a little longer. Unlike everyone else in the sport, he retired at a point in his career, when he was nearly unbeatable.
